Building a structured Astro city guide for Bangkok
WhyBangkok.com is a current Astro-based Bangkok city guide built as a structured content platform, not just a collection of articles. The project combines route design, content modelling, internal linking, search, and editorial tooling so Bangkok guides can grow without becoming hard to maintain.

The challenge
City guides can easily turn into disconnected pages that are difficult for readers, editors, and search engines to understand. Bangkok adds another layer of complexity because areas, districts, transport lines, stations, attractions, restaurants, shopping, and accommodation all relate to each other.
My role
I handle the full technical and strategic implementation: Astro development, content modelling, route structure, technical SEO, internal linking, search, deployment, and editorial support tooling.
What I built
- Built the site in Astro with structured content collections for areas, districts, transport, restaurants, shopping, attractions, accommodation, and guides.
- Created route structures for transport systems, lines, and stations so Bangkok content can be connected instead of isolated.
- Added Pagefind search and a search logging API to support discovery and future content decisions.
- Prepared Cloudflare deployment and performance-oriented static delivery.
- Developed AI-assisted tooling with Supabase, OpenAI embeddings, semantic search, and internal-link suggestion scripts.
Outcome
The project has established a maintainable technical base for a long-term Bangkok guide. Content can be added inside a clear structure, related pages can be connected deliberately, and search data can help guide future editorial work instead of relying only on guesswork.
What the project taught me
- A content platform is strongest when the relationships between pages are designed deliberately, not added as an afterthought.
- Astro works well for this type of project because structured content, static delivery, and component-based templates can support both performance and editorial control.
- Search and AI-assisted tooling are useful only when they support a clear content model; they do not replace the underlying information architecture.
